Seward

With the discovery of gold in the Iditarod country in 1908, Seward became the winter port for the new gold fields. In 1978 the Iditarod was made a National Historic Trail with Seward as Mile “0”.

Design note: Attachment 1 lists Maps (interactive) first under Plan a Trip. Today the Trail Map page is one image with the alt text “Picture”. This map is drawn in code from the trail lines in the Alliance’s own 2015 Story Map and public Census and USGS place data, so it stays sharp at any size, works with a keyboard, needs no third-party map service, and comes with the same places as a list of links for anyone who can’t see it. Trailheads, cabins and passport-stamp locations can be added as further layers once the Alliance supplies them.

Recreation by season

Winter visit

On some sections of the trail, temperatures can regularly drop as low as −40 degrees, with snow possible at any time. The Iditarod Sled Dog Race is a great time to experience the rush of the Trail and to learn about the local communities: the Ceremonial Start is in Anchorage and the Race restart is in Willow. Several trails in Girdwood are also winter ski trails.

Summer visit

The Iditarod Trail is primarily a winter trail, and many sections are barely usable in summer; locals rely on rivers for travel between villages instead. Sections within Chugach State Park, the Chugach National Forest, Girdwood and Eagle River boast wonderful summer trails.

Passport Program

The Trail received its first stamp from the National Park Travelers Club in July 2014; there are now nine stamps at locations along the Trail. Collect them in your Passport To Your National Parks.
